What is Federal Income Tax?
Federal income tax is the tax the IRS collects on wages, self-employment income, and other taxable income. It uses progressive brackets: you pay 10% on the first portion of taxable income, 12% on the next, and so on up to 37%. Taxable income is gross income minus the standard deduction (or itemized deductions). This calculator uses 2024 brackets and standard deduction only.

2024 IRS Tax Brackets and Standard Deduction

Federal Tax vs FICA vs State Tax
Federal income tax is progressive and uses brackets. FICA (Social Security 6.2% and Medicare 1.45%) is separate and withheld on W-2 pay. State income tax varies by state. This tool is federal only; for the full picture use Net Salary Calculator USA.
Effective vs Marginal Tax Rate
Your marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of income (e.g. 24%). Your effective rate is total federal tax ÷ gross income and is lower because of the standard deduction and lower brackets on earlier income. The calculator shows effective rate in the breakdown.
