Understanding Indian Tax System
India follows a progressive tax system where tax rates increase with income. The government offers two tax regimes - old regime with deductions and new regime with lower rates but fewer deductions.
Income Tax Slabs FY 2024-25 (New Regime)
- ₹0 - ₹3,00,000: No tax
- ₹3,00,001 - ₹7,00,000: 5%
- ₹7,00,001 - ₹10,00,000: 10%
- ₹10,00,001 - ₹12,00,000: 15%
- ₹12,00,001 - ₹15,00,000: 20%
- Above ₹15,00,000: 30%
Standard deduction of ₹75,000 is available under the new regime.
Tax Saving Deductions
- Section 80C: Up to ₹1,50,000 deduction for ELSS, PPF, EPF, NSC, tax-saver FD, life insurance premium, tuition fees, etc.
- Section 80D: Up to ₹25,000 for health insurance (₹50,000 for senior citizens). Additional ₹25,000/₹50,000 for parents.
- Section 80CCD(1B): Additional ₹50,000 for NPS contributions.
- Section 24(b): Up to ₹2,00,000 for home loan interest on self-occupied property.
